Synthesis Process

You now have a screened, appraised set of papers, the raw material for a review. Turning that material into a review is the work still ahead of you.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this unit, you will be able to:

  • Build an extraction template and a coding scheme, deductive, inductive, or abductive, chosen to fit your review type rather than a generic default.
  • Build and read a concept-centric matrix, by column rather than by row, to synthesize what a corpus of papers collectively knows rather than what each paper individually said.
  • Diagnose a contradiction between two papers as a clue to an unnamed contingency factor, and state the boundary condition that resolves it as your review’s synthetic contribution.

The Concept Matrix

Concept-Centric Review

This is the single most consequential move in your synthesis, and the one most teams miss.

Exercise

Take five papers from your current corpus and your extraction template.

Build the first rows and columns of your concept matrix. Then write one sentence per concept, reading down the column, not across the row.

Synthesis Techniques

Technique Selection

  • Thematic synthesis: identify recurring themes across the corpus, inductively, and organize the narrative around them. Common for qualitative systematic and scoping reviews.
  • Framework synthesis: apply an existing conceptual framework as the organizing structure for the synthesis, useful when your review is deductively testing or extending a specific theory.
  • Narrative synthesis: a structured, but non-statistical, textual synthesis, common when the included studies are too heterogeneous in method or context to pool numerically, but a purely thematic organization would lose important comparative structure.

Exercise

Match each invented review description below to thematic, framework, or narrative synthesis. Justify each choice in one sentence.

  1. A review of 40 qualitative case studies on remote-work adoption, no shared theoretical starting point across the studies, aiming to map what recurs across them.
  2. A review testing and extending affordance theory across 25 studies of enterprise AI tools, all explicitly framed by the same theoretical constructs.
  3. A review of 30 studies on algorithmic management, mixing surveys, interviews, and experiments, too heterogeneous to pool statistically but needing a structured comparison across method and context.

Contradictory Findings

Contingency Factors

A contradiction in the literature is a clue that points toward a contingency factor. Resist the urge to average it away.

Exercise

Two invented studies disagree:

  • Study A finds that AI-agent autonomy increases user trust; users report feeling relieved of a monitoring burden.
  • Study B finds that AI-agent autonomy decreases user trust; users report feeling unable to verify the agent’s decisions.

Name, out loud, one plausible contingency factor that could explain why both findings hold, in different conditions. State the resulting boundary condition in one sentence.

Synthetic Contribution

Contribution Threshold

Noticing a pattern only describes what the literature says. Explaining why the pattern holds, and where it stops holding, is what makes it a contribution.

Homework

Produce your concept matrix, version one.

Create your full concept matrix, and for each concept column, one written synthesis statement, including, where the corpus disagrees, your best account of the contingency factor that explains the disagreement.
